Early on in my walk with God a read a book by a prominent men’s ministry leader who said, “A leader who truly models Christ’s likeness leads for the benefit of the people following him.” He referred to such individuals as “servant-leaders.” Seven years after reading that it still resonates with me.
I’ve been actively participating in local and global outreach through a variety of different church and parachurch ministries since the inception of my faith. However, this year in the Future Leaders Program is the first chance I have had to engage in a formal role in full-time vocational ministry. On a consistent basis I have opportunities to lead people whether that’s through leading a short-term international mission trip, working with volunteer leaders, teaching various workshops, or through intentional discipleship relationships. Over and over again I am reminded of the simple yet profound notion that we are not “doing ministry,” rather, we are partnering with God in His mission of redemption and restoration in this broken world. God is the Victor, as well as the main character in this story – not me.
All things considered, if I am truly leading for the benefit of the people following me, the best thing I can give people cannot be captured in a powerful mission trip experience. It’s also not about helping other leaders craft the catchiest mission statement, or the best strategic plan. It’s not about me being the most remarkable teacher the audience has heard. If I’m leading for the benefit of the people following me – the most significant thing that I have to offer is Christ (the ultimate servant-leader), and the Word of God.
Being a Future Leader for a year is helping me become the servant-leader I long to be for a lifetime.
